WHO confirms video game addiction as a disease

The new classification of diseases will take effect on January 1, 2022.

"The video game disorder has been added to the section relating to addiction disorders", under these words the inclusion of the video game addiction as one more condition of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD, for its acronym in English) of the who (World Health Organization).


Now there will be several more bureaucratic steps. In this sense, this update will be taken to the 72nd World Health Assembly scheduled for May 2019 for adoption by the Member States, including Spain and Mexico and the rest of the Spanish-speaking countries, entering into force on 1 January 2022.


In the British public radio television, the prestigious BBC, they collect in a piece of information the three key symptoms that can help users to determine whether or not they are addicted to video games: loss of control over the game, prioritizing the game over any other activity , and continuation or increase of the game.


Since the publication of the draft of new diseases made public in December, a wide controversy has been opened with some scientists speaking out against it and with the Government of Spain anticipating events including video games in its National Addiction Strategy among other news.
