Cyberpunk 2077 aspires to outsell the Witcher 3
CD Projekt believes that this science fiction universe can attract a greater number of players.
After completing their work with the adventures of Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher saga, the team of CD Projekt RED He is currently working on the ambitious Cyberpunk 2077, a sci-fi RPG based on the board game of the same name that aims to outsell The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
"I think none of us expected such incredible success from the game or from CD Projekt itself," said one of the studio's founders, Michal Kicińsk. "We are talking about a video game that has won almost every possible award and accolade in the industry," he adds. "If we expected more," he says of Cyberpunk 2077, "it would be even better sales."
Already at the time, remember, the CEO of the study stressed that The Witcher 3 had become "a gigantic commercial success, but in terms of sales, there is still a lot of room to grow." And in the study they believe that their new RPG has the potential to reach that new market, especially because of its futuristic theme.
"The Witcher offered fantastic material for a video game, but at the same time it limited us," says Michal Kicińsk, alluding to the fantasy context for which this universe is committed and, above all, to the fact that it was a particularly well-known brand in Europe and Eastern Europe, but not so much in America. "I am sure that Cyberpunk 2077 can achieve much greater commercial success than The Witcher 3. Its futuristic world is much closer to what we know in our daily lives."
He also believes that it is a "much more popular" theme, due to its massive presence in movies, books, comics and video games. "You have to remember that fantasy is a much more niche theme."
